Professor tells about African adventure
Dr. Ann Buchmann, Chadron State College associate professor of science, opened a new speakers’ series Thursday by telling about her experiences in the land of the Serengeti and Mount Kilimanjaro.
The inspiration for the presentation was Buchmann’s trip to Tanzania in East Africa with three colleagues five years ago. During the hour-long presentation, “Life and Death in East Africa,” the professor told about the region’s unique history, landscape and animals.
Buchmann illustrated the presentation with photos of the landscape and encounters with predators and prey of the region, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, gazelles and water buffalo. As an example of the Serengeti’s predator-prey relationships, Buchmann analyzed an Internet video of a battle involving lions, a herd of water buffalo and crocodiles.
Buchmann, who joined the CSC faculty in August 2007, teaches microbiology, immunology and molecular biology. She earned a doctorate from Northwestern University and a bachelor’s degree from Saint Mary’s College of Winona, Minn.
About 30 people attended Buchmann’s presentation, the first of the Physical and Life Science Department’s new “Science Abroad” series.
The next speaker on the schedule is Dr. Twila Fickel who will tell about her medical relief mission to Haiti following last year’s devastating earthquake. The presentation will be Thursday, Sept. 23, in room 144 of the Math and Science Building at 5 p.m.
Other presenters in the series will be Dr. Joyce Hardy, Oct. 7; students Jacob Zitterkopf of Scottsbluff and Ashley Maxon of Laurel, Nov. 4; and Dr. Mathew Brust, Nov. 18.
