Parade marshals neared 'a century of service'
Two retired Chadron couples who nearly accumulated “a century of service” to Chadron State College have been chosen to serve as the institution’s homecoming parade marshals Saturday. They are Dr. Dorset and Meredith Graves, and Dr. James and June Sheaffer.
CSC’s Blue Key chapter, which organizes the annual parade, selected the couples for their years of service to the college and the community, said Aaron Rutt, one of the chapter’s sponsors. Combined, the faculty members have completed 99 years of instruction at CSC, Rutt said. The college is celebrating 99 years this fall as it begins a year-long centennial celebration. The centennial's theme is "A Century of Service."
Rutt said a wide variety of floats, cars and bands are expected for the parade, which begins traveling north on Main Street at 9:30 a.m. Entries are welcome to show up the day of the event. The entrants are not required to preregister, but are asked to be on campus, lined up and ready for judging by 9 a.m.
Both Graves were employed at CSC. Dorset taught language arts from 1958 to 1990 and served as an adjunct faculty member from 1990 to 2005. Meredith was on the staff from 1977 to 1988. The Graves Lecture Series at CSC’s King Library is named in Dorset’s honor.
James Sheaffer, who taught government and political science courses, was on the faculty from 1958 to 1999. He and June attend scores of events at the college each year, and have become known for their support of students and faculty.
The parade will precede CSC’s Homecoming Luncheon and the Eagles’ football game against the Western New Mexico Mustangs at 1:30 p.m. The theme of this year’s homecoming celebration is “Building Futures through the Decades: History in the Making.”
