Chadron State College is already seeing a financial benefit to replacing lights on campus in recent years.

Representatives from Nebraska Public Power District made a special presentation Monday, Jan. 25, reflecting a savings by way of energy efficiency rebate to Chadron State College.

Bryce Landen, NPPD energy efficiency consultant, and Terry Rajewich, NPPD account manager, delivered to CSC a $27,405.12 check made possible through NPPD’s EnergyWise incentive program for changes made to the college’s lighting.

The changes include replacement of 1,268 lights in Old Admin and Sparks Hall, a majority of which were changed from four-foot tube fluorescent lights to T8 fluorescent lights. The change reflected an annual projected savings to the college represented by the rebate check.

“This was a great opportunity to lower some of our operating costs at Chadron State College through the changes in our lighting program,” said Dale Grant, CSC vice president for administration. “NPPD’s EnergyWise program allows us to cut our energy use, which has resulted in savings, while still maintaining a quality level of lighting for our staff and students.”

NPPD’s Commercial, Industrial, and Area Lighting Efficiency Program offers cash incentives to help cover the cost of a variety of energy-efficient upgrades. On average, interior lighting accounts for 28 percent of a business’ energy consumption. NPPD officials also say the lights also are a contributing factor to a facility’s productivity, employee morale and safety. Lighting technologies developed during the past 10 years can help cut lighting costs 30 to 60 percent while enhancing lighting quality and reducing environmental impacts.
