Morning of planting, weeding set for arboretum volunteers
Flowers will greet Chadron State College students this fall, thanks to the CSC Arboretum volunteers who will sow seeds and pull weeds on campus Saturday, June 12. Volunteers are invited to meet at 9 a.m. at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center and work until noon.
The event is designed to help people learn how to select plants and when to sow annual flower seeds for blooms at specific times of year.
“We are eager to have folks get their hands in the soil and learn these techniques to bring home,” said Lucinda Mays, Chadron State College horticulturist.
Mays will provide volunteers a brief classroom session followed by a planting demonstration and hands on work session in the campus gardens.
“These are family friendly activities, so we encourage volunteers of all ages. We hope folks will come for all or part of the morning, and we commit to end promptly at noon,” Mays said.
Volunteers are asked to bring what they have of hand trowels, rakes and garden spades. People are reminded to dress for the weather and wear gloves, hat and bring your own drinking water. Snacks will be provided. In case of inclement weather, Saturday, June 19, is the back-up date.
