Large crowd expected for Saturday's powwow

Organizers of Chadron State College Powwow are making room for more people.

Although the meal for Saturday’s event will be served in the CSC Student Center ballroom as in the past, the drumming and dancing will be at the Nelson Physical Activity Center. The two grand entries at the NPAC will be at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. The meal in the Student Center will be 4-6 p.m. The event, including the meal, is open to the public free of charge.

“Every year, there gets to be more drummers and dancers and people attending the powwow,” said Sarah Polak, one of the event’s organizers who is director of CSC’s Sandoz Center. “We’ve just outgrown the Student Center for that part.”

Immediately following Saturday’s first grand entry, the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation will formally recognize CSC’s White Buffalo Club with a proclamation.

Polak said the event, which was moved from fall to spring this year, is growing and gaining diverse funding sources. This year, the college received a grant from the Shakopee Mdewakanton Community of Minnesota to help pay for the event’s expenses.
