Three Chadron State College community counseling graduate students and professor, Dr. Mary Jo Carnot, presented their paper, “College Athletes vs. Non-Athletes: Happiness and Humor/Playfulness,” at the 80th Annual Rocky Mountain Psychological Association Convention Saturday, April 16, in Denver.

The presenters were Tara Hindman, a graduate student from Hay Springs, Maya Holmes, a graduate student from Chadron, Corissa Kesterson, a graduate student from Mountain View, Wyo., and Dr. Mary Jo Carnot, an associate professor at Chadron State College.

The presentation addressed the importance of happiness, humor and playfulness in coping with stress and how they can be used as defense mechanisms. According to the paper, positive correlations were found among these variables in a sample of 54 college students, with differences between athletes and non-athletes. Athletes showed less correlation between the variables, but were happier than non-athletes.
