CSC readies for orientation, start of school year

Chadron State College's new students will arrive for orientation festivities this week, marking the beginning of another school year. The orientation Thursday through Sunday, Aug. 19-22, is designed to help new students prepare for the beginning of classes Monday, Aug. 23.

"We're on track for another great orientation," said Deena Kennell, director of CSC Career and Academic Planning Services. "It's always exciting to see the new and returning students arrive to campus. It's super busy and hectic, and it seems we all love it."
The new students and their guests, expected to consist of as many as 1,200 people, are scheduled to arrive and move in to the residence halls throughout the day Thursday until they convene at Elliott Field at 4:30 p.m. for a class photo and welcoming remarks. Because of the implementation of the college's new student information system, Kennell said more emphasis is being placed this year on making sure students have their "paperwork" in order. A one-stop business services help center will be operating in the ballroom of the Student Center 6-8 p.m. Friday to assist any students who may have questions.
In sessions throughout the orientation, CSC staff will present a wide array of information to help students become acclimated to college. Session topics include computer connection and technology, advising and academic success, and residence life. Meals include a variety show Thursday, a welcome-back barbecue Friday under a large tent, and a tailgate lunch following Saturday's football scrimmage. Dr. Randy Rhine, CSC vice president for student services, said a temporary one-stop help center also will be established in the lobby of Crites Hall during the opening days of the semester to help both new and returning students. He said students should take note of two considerable changes this year. One is a new two-week deadline to drop and add courses. The other is that students will not receive a printed bill this fall as that information will be accessible only online.
