Chadron State College paid tribute Thursday morning to the nation’s servicemen and servicewomen with a Veterans Day ceremony at the Dean’s Green.

U.S. Army Maj. Logan Veath, a CSC Reserve Officer Training Corps instructor, delivered a five-minute address to veterans and others gathered at the ceremony. To reinforce his message, he borrowed a quote from novelist Cynthia Ozick.

“We often take for granted the very things that deserve our gratitude,” he said. “In this country, it’s our veterans.”

Veath encouraged those in attendance to use the holiday for its intended purpose.

“Today is our opportunity to thank our veterans for their sacrifice to this great nation. It is to be thankful that there are great men and women who fight for our freedoms,” he said. “They have set aside their priorities for a greater calling. Without their sacrifices, we would not have the freedoms we enjoy on a day-to-day basis.”

The event also featured a moment of silence, a 21-gun salute by members of the CSC ROTC unit and the playing of “Taps” to honor the nation’s fallen soldiers. The crowd included the CSC football team.

The Veterans Day ceremony is expected to become an annual event at CSC. It was initiated this year by CSC’s newly formed Veterans Club, the CSC Admissions Office, and the ROTC unit, known as the War Eagles.
