If preliminary plans come to fruition, a bandshell surrounded by decorative landscaping and trees will adorn the space occupied by the Kline Campus Center after the building’s probable demolition.

Chadron State College President Dr. Janie Park showed conceptual drawings to a Chadron community service organization Thursday. The drawings, which were created by CSC horticulturist Lucinda Mays, show a number of new features that would accentuate the existing amphitheatre.

Park said a covered bandshell would provide a fitting structure for a wide variety of outdoor ceremonies, lectures and performances.

Citing concerns about the Kline Center’s condition and cost of maintenance, the Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees voted to surplus the Kline Center and approved the building’s demolition during last month’s meeting at Lincoln.

Dale Grant, CSC vice president for administration, said the building is being vacated and will be demolished as soon as this summer if no other community entity comes forward with a feasible plan to renovate and lease it.

Park unveiled two other conceptual drawings for proposed campus improvements Thursday, including a campus entrance that includes digital and historical signage at the corner of 10th and Main streets, and a flag plaza on the Dean’s Green.

Grant noted each plan is in its infancy and will need to pass the appropriate approval processes.
