Author David Owen will be at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center for a signing and reading of his new book,“Like No Other Place: The Sandhills of Nebraska,” Thursday, July 29, in the Chicoine Atrium of Chadron State College's Sandoz Center at 7 p.m.

Owen said, “This book is the story of how, at first, an idea grew from my imagination where I wanted to live in a place long enough to know the how the surface of the things becomes deeply imprinted with the lives, the stories, the attitudes, the spirituality, the weather of those who live and work there.”

The book is about Owen’s experience and view about one of America’s distinctive places. Owen said this book means, “That this is a region with roots. That there is a solid sense of duration. Not so for so very much of the rest of the country.”

Sandoz Center Director Sarah Polak is excited to have Owen visit.

“I am excited to be taking the center in this new direction. Our patrons have told us that they would like to see events like this, and I hope this will be one of many successful book signings,” she said.

Polak said the center hosted a signing of Kimberli Lee’s book “I do not Apologize for the Length of this Letter” this spring and the book sold out.

Owen was born and raised in Ohio and spent 15 years serving parishes in Chicago. He has been featured twice in Nebraska Life magazine as well as won numerous awards and recognition for his photography.
