Arboretum volunteers marking first year with Saturday's project

Chadron State College Campus Arboretum volunteers will celebrate their one-year anniversary when meeting Saturday, Oct. 2, to kick off a project at the CSC Child Development Center playground.

The group will meet 9 a.m. at the Sandoz Center before going to the CDC. The project will end at noon.

“All our events are very family friendly, but this one is particularly focused on how kids interact with natural elements incorporated into the areas built for play,” said Lucinda Mays, CSC public horticulturist. “Families with children are always welcome to volunteer and this workday is specifically planned with kids in mind.”

The vlunteers have met quarterly since October 2009 for horticultural lessons and projects across campus. Throughout the year 5-20 volunteers have attended work days focused on seed collection, weeding, planting and pruning, soil preparation and rejuvenating iris beds.

Arboretum volunteers host learn and work days on campus about every 6-8 weeks. Participants are encouraged to bring water bottles, sunscreen, hat and gloves, and favorite tools.
