American Indian pipemaker coming to campus

Published:

Rick Hull of Crawford, an American Indian who makes ceremonial pipes for various tribes and individuals, will make a series of presentations at Chadron State College on Wednesday, April 7.

In addition to speaking about mining pipestone and the art of ceremonial pipemaking, Hull, who also is working on an American Indian sculpture west of Fort Robinson State Park, is expected to talk about various other aspects of native culture. He creates the handmade pipes from stone he mines from a sacred site in Pipestone, Minn. The mining at the site, which is exclusive to American Indians, is completed by hand.

The speaker will be present during three sessions, each of which is open to the public. They are 11 a.m. in Dr. Mary Jo Carnot’s culture and psychology class at Miller Hall 308; 1 p.m. in Dr. Joel Hyer’s Northern Plains Indian cultures class at Old Admin 331; and a round-table seminar and open forum at 2 p.m. in Miller Hall 202.

Hull’s appearance is being sponsored by the CSC Diversity Committee.
