50th CSC Scholastic Contest is Friday

Published:

For the 50th consecutive year, Chadron State College will welcome hundreds of high school students from near and far for its annual Scholastic Contest on Friday.

A total of 1,416 students representing 52 high schools are registered, for the event, which covers nearly every aspect of the curriculum with 46 exams. The tests will run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at sites across campus.

Dr. James Wright, a CSC business professor who serves as chairman of Scholastic Contest committee, said the organizers have made an effort to make this year special. The day will feature scores of activities, contests and displays for the visiting teenagers while they’re not taking tests. Each student who takes a test will do so with a 50th anniversary pencil.

Seniors who place first in a test receive the Scholastic Achievement Award, which covers the in-state portion of tuition for CSC’s 2010-2011 academic year. The high school that scores the most points in each of the contest’s five divisions will receive a plaque, and the top three individuals in each test are awarded medals.

An addition to this year’s test slate of test subjects is the “Eagle Cook-Off” administered by CSC Family and Consumer Science professor Jay Sutliffe. The activity involves teams of three preparing healthy meals the typical college student will eat. The meals must meet dietary and cost guidelines, and must be prepared with a limited number of appliances.

The CSC Scholastic Contest, which began in 1961 with 846 students from 41 schools, is believed to be the oldest and largest of its kind in the High Plains region. This year’s registration is up 165 from last year’s total. The highest number of entrants was 1992 with 2,643 in attendance.
