Work day provides hands-on gardening opportunity

The Chadron State College arboretum is hosting a work day Saturday, Dec. 5, for volunteers to help put the campus plants to bed for the winter.

Volunteers are needed from 9 a.m. to noon to help mulch, prune, gather seeds and do other necessary garden winterizing tasks. Volunteers meet at CSC’s Sandoz Center.

“This is the first of a series of seasonal volunteer work days we will be hosting,” said Lucinda Mays, CSC horticulturist. “We'd love the help of the community to maintain the campus arboretum to its full potential and believe we have a lot to offer on the 186 acres of campus gardens. Public horticulture is a great way to welcome and engage people with our campus. It's a way to learn about our High Plains environment and how to grow things here.”

Work days are planned for each season throughout the year to provide the opportunity for community members to learn more about working with plants of the High Plains and landscape gardening techniques. Each work day begins with a mini-lesson and demonstration of the work to be done and followed by up to two hours of work activities. Future sessions will include instruction and work days for proper tree/shrub pruning, water saving irrigation techniques and learning the plants that thrive in the High Plains.

“These will be family friendly activities, so we encourage volunteers of all ages. We hope folks will come for all or part of the day, and we commit to end promptly at noon,” says Mays.

Volunteers are asked to bring yard and garden tools along with gloves and drinking water. Seeds and divided plants will be offered to volunteers to take home.

More information may be obtained by contacting Mays at 308-430-4186.
