Three music groups to perform Friday

Three music groups will perform during the Chadron State College Jazz Ensembles Concert Friday, Dec 4, at 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall Auditorium. The concert is open to the public free of charge.

The concert will feature music by the Guitar Ensemble, the Jazz Ensemble and the Vocal Jazz Ensemble. The Jazz Ensemble is the school's instrumental jazz big band and will perform numbers from Latin and rock charts as well as swing and jazz.

“Some selections are historically important works, from the libraries of the best bands of the swing era,” said Micheal Stephens, the concert’s director.

The band’s rendition of "Ko Ko" by Duke Ellington, will feature trombonists Taylor Woodward of Broken Bow and Lane Deines of Kearney, a guest piano solo by music faculty member Dr. Jim Margetts, and the upright bass of David Barger of Hershey.

Count Basie's "One O'Clock Jump" will feature numerous soloists while navigating through a number of different keys. Moving ahead a few decades, Thad Jones' "Us" is a driving rock tune that highlights some section playing in the band as well as providing solo space for Wes Mitchell of Rapid City on vibes and Andy Young of Spearfish on guitar. An exciting Latin piece, "El Caborajeno", by Bob Mintzer, features the band's three drummers, all from Rapid City: Kaleb Britton, Austin Cecil, and Mitchell.
