Teahon named chairman of NSCS Board of Trustees

The Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees selected Larry Teahon of Chadron as its 2009-10 chairman and Carter “Cap” Peterson as vice chairman. Teahon, who presided over his first NSCS Board meeting in September, succeeds past chair Bill Roskens of Omaha.

A graduate of Chadron State College, Teahon is manager of Environmental Health and Safety for Crow Butte Resources, Inc, in Crawford. He and his wife, Linda, live in Chadron.

First appointed to the NSCS Board in 2001, Teahon  has been chairman of the Fiscal and Facilities Committee since 2004. While chairman, many significant improvements were made to the infrastructures at Chadron, Peru and Wayne State Colleges.

“I believe in the mission and purpose of the Nebraska State Colleges and understand the importance of the maintaining affordable, high quality education for students and their families. As a lifelong supporter of higher education, I know the Nebraska State College System is an integral part of the higher education system in Nebraska,” Teahon said.

The former city manager of Chadron, Teahon is active in the community. He has served on the Dawes County Agricultural Society, Northwest Nebraska Development Corporation and the Chamber of Commerce. He has also served on the Chadron State Alumni Council.

“Larry is committed to the Nebraska State College System and its students. His background in city administration and his understanding of financial management, auditing and the oversight of capital projects makes him a valuable resource. We are very pleased to have him at the helm of the Board,” NSCS Chancellor Stan Carpenter said.

Along with the vice chair position, Peterson also serves as the chair of the Board’s Fiscal and Facilities Committee. An insurance salesman and former claims adjuster, he and his wife, Nana, own Northeast Nebraska Insurance Agency, Inc., and Antiques on Main in Wayne.

A Wayne State graduate and former adjunct instructor in business at the college, Peterson has served as a trustee and member of the executive board for the Wayne State College Foundation. He also received the Wayne State College Distinguished Service Award.

“Chadron, Peru and Wayne State provide their area with cultural and academic resources that these small communities would not have without these colleges,” Peterson said. “The colleges and the system are all about the students. I wanted to be part of this board to help maintain and expand the statewide offerings, because they are good for Nebraska and the surrounding states.”

Active in the community, Peterson has been chair of the Wayne County Red Cross and member and past master of the Wayne Masonic Lodge. He has served on the Board of the Nebraska School Board Association, Wayne Community School, Wayne Kiwanis, and the Chamber of Commerce. He was also on the board for United Way and Wayne Industries.

“Cap has vast experience in many different areas, including Wayne State. He provides great insight for us and takes particular interest in hearing the students’ perspective,” Carpenter said.

The NSCS Board of Trustees also includes: Chair of the Academic, Personnel and Student Affairs Committee Gary Bieganski of Chadron, Enrollment and Marketing Chair Michelle Suarez of Lincoln, Bill Roskens of Omaha, Floyd Vrtiska of Table Rock, and Roger Breed of Omaha, who is also the State Commissioner of Education. The student trustees are Doug Liewer of Butte, Chadron State representative; Samantha Meyer of Fairbury, Peru State representative and David Seger of O’Neill, Wayne State representative.

The Nebraska State College System serves close to 8,600 students from Nebraska and surrounding states through three geographically diverse institutions: Chadron, Peru and Wayne State Colleges. Combined, the three colleges offer more than 200 degree, certificate, and pre-professional programs that are accessible on the three campuses, via the Internet, and in several satellite locations throughout the state. With more than 250 credentialed faculty members and 50,000 successful graduates, the NSCS provides significant human and intellectual capital that contributes to the current and future economic strength of the State of Nebraska.

The next NSCS Board meeting is Friday, Nov. 13, at Lincoln.
