People looking for an inexpensive night out will have many opportunities in the coming months.

Chadron State College's Mari Sandoz Center and its Communication Arts program each will provide opportunities for students and other members of the public to view movies free of charge this semester.

"Twelve Angry Men" will open the Communication Arts series tonight (Thursday, Feb. 12). Other movies in that series include "Control Room," Thursday, March 19; "Salvador," Thursday, April 2; and "Goodnight and Good Luck," Thursday, April 16. Each of the films will be shown at the Bean Broker, 202 W. Second St. in Chadron, at 7 p.m. People are being asked only to bring a chair.

The Sandoz Center series will pay tribute to three African American films, in celebration of an exhibit on display now at the center. It will begin Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 6 p.m. at the center with the 1938 film, "Bronze Venus." Other featured movies will be "Lilies of the Field" on Wednesday, Feb. 25, and "The Great White Hope" on Wednesday, March 4.

The Communication Arts series is intended to expose the program's students to cinema that pertains to their fields of study and increase visibility for the department.

The Sandoz Center's free movie nights will be hosted in conjunction with the center's current exhibit, "Imaging Blackness 1915-2002: Film Posters from the Indiana University Black Film Center/Archive." The selected films are just a few of the many represented in the exhibit which examines the traditions and perception of African Americans in the movies. The exhibit includes many black film posters and accompanying text depicting the images of African Americans in each genre and generation of films.
