Krepel named Fairmont State president
Fairmont State University of West Virginia announced Friday that former Chadron State College President Dr. Tom Krepel has been named the institution’s 13th president. He will begin his new duties July 1.
Fairmont State, located in Fairmont, W.V., has an enrollment of about 7,700. Of the three finalists for the position, Krepel was the only one with presidential experience.
Krepel, who was CSC’s ninth president, led CSC from 1998 to 2005. He came to Chadron State as senior vice president for academic affairs in August 1997, and became the interim president six months later. At the request of the Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees, he assumed the office on a permanent basis July 1, 1998. He left the position June 30, 2005.
After leaving CSC, he became assistant to the president at Northern Illinois University at DeKalb. Krepel was serving in NIU’s administration during the February 2008 shooting that resulted in six dead and 18 wounded.
Similar to CSC, Fairmont State was founded as a normal school to educate teachers and has expanded its mission to offer a wide variety of undergraduate and master’s degree programs. Through Pierpont Community College and Technical College, which is part of the institution, two-year degrees also are offered.
