Wednesday, Nov. 11, marked the sixth annual Jump Rope for Heart event at Chadron State. The CSC Elementary Rhythmic class developed and organized the event.

A total of 125 area elementary students ranging from kindergarten to fourth grade participated in activities designed to teach children why it is important to stay physically active.

“In several stations not only did the participants stay physically active, but they also learned the importance of how staying physically active can help prevent heart disease, stroke, diabetes and obesity,” said Donna Ritzen, CSC assistant professor of HPER. “We are so proud of our students. They did a great job at working with these children and keeping them motivated.”

On Tuesday, Nov. 17, in partnership with the Panhandle Public Health Department and the Nebraska Beef Council, CSC sponsored its third annual Dance for the Health of It day. Approximately 115 third grade students from Chadron and Gordon-Rushville school districts participated.

The event consisted of six dance stations and six health stations. These stations were run by CSC students in the Elementary Rhythmic, Theory of Physical Education, and HPER Methods courses.

Dawn Brammer, CSC assistant professor in health and physical education, explained the importance of this opportunity for both the college and elementary students.

“This event provides hands-on experience for our students and helps them familiarize, troubleshoot, and experience things that they may encounter in their teaching careers. It is a fun, controlled atmosphere that provides benefits for all involved,” Brammer said.

The faculty members plan to continue building on the success of these events, providing a learning experience for both college and elementary students.
