Rapid City Stevens and Chadron high schools were repeat winners in Chadron State College's Scholastic Contest on Friday.

More than 1,400 students participated in 49 exams on CSC's campus. This year marked the 49th year for the annual competition. Each school's point total is derived from a formula that considers the number of entrants, placings and tests taken by students from each school.

Stevens students amassed the most points of any school en route to winning the contest's Division I title for the 22nd year. The school had 12 first-places. Chadron, which came into the competition as a nine-time winner of Division II, won Division III.

The other winners were O'Neill in Division II, Anselmo-Merna in Division IV and Hyannis in Division V.

Chadron's win last year came in Division II. O'Neill won Division II in 2007.

Seniors who won first place in the competition are granted CSC Scholastic Achievement Awards, which cover the equivalent of one year of in-state tuition. Each of the division winners will receive a plaque and the top three places for each test receive a medal.

Two students won medals in all three of their exams. Kari Holmes of Scottsbluff won golds in information literacy and accounting and was third in literature. Rayna Waggener of Alliance won first in business communications and vocabulary, and had second-place finishes in English usage and the teaching module.

Holmes was one of five students to win two gold medals. Taya Lembke of Hemingford was first in equine management and animal science. Annie Pfeifle of Stevens won psychology and American Government. Jared Roehrich, also of Stevens, claimed gold in advanced mathematics and chemistry. Michael Christen of Anselmo-Merna topped all test-takers in English usage and trigonometry.

Nine other students were double medal winners. They are Caleb Cornils of Kimball, Carson Crawford of Stevens, Kalie Fridel of Atkinson West Holt, Hayden Fuchs of Stevens, Eric Lindvall of Valentine, Trevor Mahoney of Mitchell, Emily Reeves of Rapid City Central, Michael Stark of Sidney and Emily Sybrant of Rock County at Bassett.
