Valentine students score most points at CSC Scholastic Contest

Published:

For the second year in a row, students from Valentine scored the most points at the High School Scholastic Contest at Chadron State College on Friday. This was the 48th year the contest has taken place. Approximately 1,500 students participated. Valentine, which won Division III, barely nipped Rapid City Stevens, the Division I winner, for the most overall points. Valentine scored 50.740 and Stevens scored 50.727.

The school point totals are based on a formula that considers the number of entrants, placings and tests taken by students from each school.

The other division winners were Chadron in Division II, Crawford in Division IV and Cody-Kilgore in Division V.

This was the 21st time that Stevens has won Division I. Alliance was this year’s runner-up with 49.034 points.

Chadron has now won Division II nine times, but this was the first time since 1989. Sidney was this year’s runner-up. Chadron had 42.677 points and Sidney 42.344.

Prior to winning Division III last year, Valentine was the Division II winner in 1995 and 2006. O’Neill, which has been a division winner 18 times through the years, was second in Division III this year with 49.133 points.

This was Crawford’s first division title. Its students scored 47.069 points. Anselmo-Merna was the runnerup in Division IV with 44.736 points, followed closely by Creek Valley High at Chappell

Cody-Kilgore’s only other division championship was in 1998, although Cody High won three consecutive division titles in the mid-1960s before consolidating with Kilgore. This year, Cody-Kilgore finished with 39.974 points while Thedford was second with 37.944.

Each of the division winners receive plaques and the top three students in each test are presented medals. Seniors who win first in a test receive a Scholastic Achievement Award, which covers the in-state tuition to attend Chadron State for one year.

Individually, two students won medals in all three tests they took and three more earned two gold medals that are awarded to first place winners.

The triple medal winners are Lance Glunz of Perkins County High at Grant and Kristina Sorensen of Rapid City Central. Glunz was second in both Plane Geometry and Sociology and third in English Usage. Sorensen was first in Chemistry, second in Advanced Mathematics and third in Trigonometry.

The double gold medal winners were Robert Haveman of Rapid City Central , who was first in both Sociology and Vocabulary, and two students from Scottsbluff. The latter are Kari Holmes, who won both Information Literacy and Library Science/Educational Media, and Shelly Lienemann, who was first in both Animal Science and Veterinary Science.

Ten more students also won two medals in various tests. They are Sydney Brisco, Scottsbluff; Gabriel Connealy, Mullen; Amanda Elwess, Chadron; Paul Foster, Scottsbluff; Amber Knutson, Kadoka; Jace Lemmon, Valentine; William Reynolds, Sturgis; Brian Shobe, Rapid City Stevens; Ethan Simmons, Valentine; and Sterling Ziegler, Gering.
