Three women who make up “Sweethearts in Carhartts,” a touring show of western songs and cowboy poetry, performed in Memorial Hall at Chadron State College on Tuesday night.

They are, from left, Liz Masterson of Denver, Jean Prescott of Texas and Yvonne Hollenbeck of Clearfield, S.D. Much of the program was on the trials and tribulations of being a rancher’s wife, who is often called on to interpret her husband’s hand signals while sorting cattle, opening gates while riding along in a pickup to check pastures and preparing a meal in a moment’s notice after working outside all day. They concluded it’s a job not every woman wants. Liz and Jean are shown singing “In the Garden” while Yvonne recites her poem, “Nature’s Church” at the close of the presentation. The program helped open a historical exhibit on women in ranching in the Coffee Gallery of the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center at CSC.
