Many of you have likely read the about the death of one of our students and the alleged homicide investigation. It has been confirmed that Chadron State College student Kenneth Pfeiffer of Sedascian, Fla., was found dead in his home Friday evening. His roommate, Joseph Hotz of Rushville, Neb., was arrested Friday night by the Chadron Police Department. As I said in my previous statement, this is a terrible tragedy no college president wants to hear, but we will cooperate in whatever way we can w

Officers are confident that the campus and community are safe from further harm and we are communicating this to the campus. This tragedy comes in the same week the campus and community were dealing with a terrible vehicle accident resulting in injury to several members of our wrestling team on their way to a wrestling meet. We will have counselors available for students and employees who are distressed and trying to cope with these two events.

I, along with the rest of the community, am saddened by this tragedy. Although we Chadron residents consider our community to be among the safest, we know bad things can happen anywhere. It is always upsetting when a student dies, but the circumstances surrounding this death are especially distressing.

Any questions about the case should be directed to the Dawes County Attorney’s Office. Students or employees seeking counseling should call Student Academic Success Services at (308) 432-6461. As more information is released to me, it will be made available on this Web site.

Sincerely,

Janie C. Park, Ph.D.
President, Chadron State College
