Scholastic Contest is Friday
More than 1,500 students from 51 high schools in Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming are entered in the 48th annual Inter-High School Scholastic Contest at Chadron State College on Friday. Dr. Janie Park, president of Chadron State, said the scholastic contest is a time-honored tradition that recognizes the academic achievements and talents of high school students from throughout the region. The CSC contest is one of the oldest and largest of its kind in the Midwest.
Forty-eight tests will be administered by Chadron State faculty members beginning at 8:30 a.m. Students may take as many as three tests. Results of the tests will be posted throughout the day on the contest's Web site, www.csc.edu/scholastic.
Medals will be awarded to the top three individuals in each test. Seniors who win first in a test will receive a Scholastic Achievement Award, which will cover the in-state tuition to attend Chadron State for one year.
Schools accumulating the most points in each of the five divisions will receive plaques.
Several activities, including tours of various attractions on campus, a scavenger hunt and rides in a National Guard Humvee and a horse-drawn wagon, will be available for students when they are not taking a test.
In addition, the CSC English and Humanities Department is sponsoring a “Writer’s Open Mike and Mix and Mingle” in the Sandoz Center during the morning. Several displays will be available and refreshments will be served. During the 10 o’clock hour the visiting high school students are invited to share their poems, essays and other creative works. Refreshments will be served.
