Many activities scheduled for students in opening week

In addition to all of the “normal” tasks and activities associated with being a college student, CSC has planned a wide variety of “Week of Welcome” events to keep people entertained.

One of the highlights this week is a device that attaches to a vehicle to simulate driving under the influence of alcohol. The DUI Simulator, one of four owned by Professionals Encouraging Educational Reform Statewide, will be under the tent between the Student Center and Reta King Library on Wednesday, Aug. 27. The vehicle is placed on sensitive ramps and students get the DUI experience by wearing interactive goggles. Also Wednesday, representatives from area merchants will be at the Student Center for for the seventh annual Up-Town on Campus, an event designed to let students know about goods and services available in Chadron. Both events be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Thursday night will feature the annual host parent dinner, the event that pairs new students with host families in the community. The college also has arranged with local venues to provide free bowling Friday and a free movie Sunday.

Since arriving on campus late last week and during the weekend, students have dined at numerous barbecues, tested their strength and agility on a climbing wall, and socialized with their fellow students at a dance and other activities.

The large number of events follows the theme of CSC President Dr. Janie Park’s welcoming address to this year’s new students Thursday. During her presentation, which was part of New Student Orientation, she told students to make the most of their college experience.

“For college to be what you had hoped it would be, you must be an active participant in college life and engage with fellow students in campus activities,” she said.
