Eleven high school teachers from throughout Nebraska are on the campus of Chadron State College this week to take part in a science workshop designed to improve participants’ teaching skills for cardiovascular health.

Nebraska United for Rural Science Excellence is a collaborative effort between Chadron State College and the University of Nebraska Medical Center that features activities and presentations about the circulatory system. NURSE began Tuesday and ends Friday.

In addition to a wide range of lectures and discussions about cardiovascular topics, the teachers are taking part in hand-on learning activities such as the dissection of beef hearts. They also are being shown how to incorporate Internet video to their classroom instruction.

More than a half dozen CSC faculty and staff members are involved in the event. Joyce Hardy is the primary coordinator. The presenters from CSC are Jay Sutliffe, Brad Fillmore, Tim Keith, Ann Buchmann, Terry Rotherham, Robin Smith and John Shafer. The session leaders representing UNMC programs are Roxanna Jokela, Gary Hastings, Maurice Godfrey and Stan Radio.

The workshop is funded by the Postsecondary Coordinating Commission and UNMC. Next year, it will be presented in Omaha.
