The Chadron State College Galaxy Series of fine arts events and cultural programs will feature a wide variety of shows during the 2008-2009 academic year.

The list of engagements for the Memorial Hall Auditorium stage will begin Thursday, Sept. 18, with the a capella group Chapter 6. Gary May, an associate professor of social work at the University of Southern Indiana, will speak about disabilities, veterans' rights and race issues Thursday, Oct. 2. And, the Fred Garbo Inflatable Theater Co. will return to Chadron on Tuesday, Nov. 11.

The spring semester will include a presentation by Apollo 13 astronaut Fred Haise. Other events next spring will be concerts by the Bar J Wranglers, a cowboy musical and comedy group from Jackson Hole, Wyo., and the Omaha Symphony Chamber Orchestra.

The series also is funding nine art exhibits in Memorial Hall during 2008-2009. The first will be "From Particles to Planets, Exploring the Physical in Art." The exhibition, which is on tour by the Sheldon Museum of Art at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, opens Friday, Aug. 28, and will be on display through Sept. 28 in the Main Gallery.

The Galaxy Series, which has been under the direction of Loree MacNeill since its inception, is under new leadership this year. MacNeill retired as director of college relations and cultural programs July 1 and moved to Omaha with her husband, Roger.

The selection of artists, speakers and exhibits is now being handled by a 13-member committee that represents a wide range of interests across the CSC campus. Shellie Johns, CSC's coordinator of conferencing, is the committee's chairperson.

Many of the events require tickets, which are available from the CSC Box Office in Memorial Hall. The box office can be contacted by telephone at 308-432-6360 or by e-mail at boxoffice@csc.edu.
