Cycling clarinetist to perform with Margetts
Dr. Bruce Thornton, a clarinetist on a 1,600-mile tour by bicycle, will perform at Chadron State College on Friday, Sept. 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the Chicoine Atrium of the Sandoz Center. The recital will be in collaboration with James Margetts, CSC assistant professor of piano. The event is free and open to the public.
Thornton is in his 14th year as assistant professor of clarinet and jazz at the College of Saint Benedict/Saint John’s University at St. Joseph, Minn. The recital is part of Thornton’s three-concert tour, with additional performances at Dickinson State University at Dickinson, N.D., and Northern State University at Aberdeen, S.D.
“This is a great opportunity to combine two of my favorite endeavors, playing the clarinet and bicycle touring-slash-camping,” said Thornton, who rides a recumbent bicycle.
The recital will include works by Brahms, Szalowski and Mandat, and will feature the performance of a work titled “Boundary Waters.” It was composed by the clarinetist’s brother James D. Thornton.
The recital will conclude with Thornton’s arrangement of several Klezmer selections. Klezmer music is typically music for both festive and solemn occasions of Eastern European origins.
