CSC cheerleader tryouts set for Aug. 26-28
Chadron State College will have cheerleader tryouts Tuesday through Thursday, Aug. 26-28, at the Nelson Physical Activity Center. The tryouts will be 6-9 p.m. and are open to all full-time students who have cheerleading experience.
Students will have an added incentive to try out for the team this year. In an effort to attract the best cheerleaders possible, CSC will award financial assistance to those who are selected to the team.
Ann Hanson, a Chadron resident who was once a cheerleader, has been contracted to coach the squad. Two CSC employees, Deb Smith and Laure Sinn, will continue to serve as the team's advisors. Smith is a CSC admissions office employee who sponsored the Eagles' cheerleaders last year and the dance team for four years ending in 2006. Sinn, the college's student activities coordinator, has been a CSC cheerleading sponsor for 14 years.
Hanson said the number of cheerleaders to be chosen has not been determined, but that she would rather coach a small group that is enthusiastic about backing the Eagles than a larger one that isn't as supportive.
"Because they will be receiving money, members of the team will have to make more of a commitment than they have in the past," Hanson said. "We're looking for good students who are enthusiastic about their jobs and aren't afraid of cheering in cold weather."
Smith said students interested in trying out should be aware that CSC and other schools of the Nebraska State College System do not allow the acrobatic performances known in cheerleading circles as "stunting."
