Concert pianist coming to Memorial Hall

Petronel Malan, a critically-acclaimed concert pianist who made her symphony debut in her preteens, will put on a show at Chadron State College's Memorial Hall. It will be Monday, Feb. 25, at 7:30 p.m. The event is open to the public free of charge. Malan, who now lives in Texas, was born in 1974 to a political and musical family in South Africa where she started studying the piano at age 4. She performed with the Johannesburg Symphony at age 10.
Malan has since moved to the United States and has furthered her studies at Michigan State University and the University of North Texas while maintaining an international performance schedule. Her publicity material states that she has won “all major national competitions” in her home country and lists numerous other awards. She has been nominated for three Grammy awards, and one organization named her one of the “10 Most Inspirational Women in South Africa.”
Malan also will perform for a Black Hills Chamber Society event Sunday, Feb. 24, in Rapid City.
James Margetts, chairman of the CSC Music Department, said donations will be accepted at Malan’s performance to help the college purchase a new piano. He said a Rapid City music dealer is having a “top of the line” Kawai piano flown to Chadron from Texas for Malan to use.
