College officials remind students to refrain from illegal substances

On Dec. 5, Chadron State College officials were made aware that CSC student Joseph Hotz was arrested for the alleged murder of CSC student Kenneth Pfeiffer and subsequent media reports have made reference to the use of mushrooms and marijuana. College officials are reminding students to refrain from using any illegal substances.

"According to an arrest affidavit filed in Dawes County Court Monday, Hotz told police that he and Pfeiffer had been using mushrooms and marijuana," as reported in a Tuesday Omaha-World-Herald article.

As a safety measure, Dr. Randy Rhine, CSC vice president for student services, is reminding the CSC campus community that the use of illegal substances and alcohol is prohibited by Nebraska State Law and CSC policy. The CSC Drug and Alcohol Policy is presented on pages 65-66 of the CSC Student Handbook and specifically states that the manufacture, distribution, possession or use of controlled substances on college property is prohibited by the drug use policy adopted by the Board of Trustees of the Nebraska State College System.

He added that any drugs that are not from a retail store or pharmacy could be tainted and cause a variety of different side effects to those who consume them.

While law enforcement officials await toxicology reports in the case, CSC officials are encouraging students and others to destroy any illegal drugs in their possession and abstain from consuming any drug that was not purchased through a retail store or pharmacy.

"The message we're trying to send here is not new," Rhine said. "Don't do drugs."
