Chadron State College has hired a new assistant professor of education. Dr. Humphrey Amukamara of Phoenix, Ariz., will join the Chadron State College faculty this fall where he will train students to teach special education. Amukamara, 54, was most recently employed as a special education teacher at Phoenix Union High School District in Arizona, which encompasses 220 square miles and has an enrollment of more than 25,000. While there, he has been responsible for coordinating the Emotional Disabi

Amukamara is a native of Nigeria, where his father was an elementary headmaster. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Nebraska at Kearney in 1985 and 1988, respectively.

His doctoral dissertation, which he completed at Arizona State University in 1998, studied African-American fathers and early adolescents and revealed ways to help men become more successful in the family.

Amukamara said his new position is like a “homecoming,” because he lived in Nebraska for six years.

“Some of my close friends went to CSC,” he said. “I am looking forward to becoming part of the system.”

Amukamara and his wife, MaryAnn Ngozi, have three children: daughter Quinn, 21, and sons Kingsley, 19, and Phillip, 16.
