Western art show opening at Memorial Hall
Fifteen artists, nearly all of them from Nebraska and South Dakota, will be displaying their works at the second annual Western Art Show at Chadron State College.
The show will be in the Main Gallery of Memorial Hall, beginning Friday, Nov. 2 and remain open through the middle of the month. A reception honoring the artists will take place about 4 p.m. Friday.
The opening of the show will be in conjunction with the Cowboy Poetry Gathering this weekend.
The coordinator of the show, Ken Korte, said the High Plains is blessed with so many outstanding western painters and sculptors that he decided they should be featured at this year’s show.
“The artists from right around here are as good as there is anyplace,” said Korte. “They are really talented, create works that are typical of the area and have material everyone will enjoy. It’s going to be another outstanding show.”
Most of the work will be offered for sale. Korte, who has a strong background in art, said he’s seen the prices that have been placed on most of the pieces and he believes many of them are bargains.
The only artist from outside the region who will display work is Don Prechtel of Portland, Ore., who is Korte’s long-time friend.
The Nebraska artists whose work will be displayed are Mary Tejda Brown, Whitney; Charlene Hare, Ogallala; Mary Hunt, Gering; Dave Price, Valentine; Don Ruleaux and Robin Smith, both of Chadron; Jim Whartman, Hemingford; and Rick Yusten, Gordon.
The South Dakota artists in the show are Mick Harrison, John Lopez and James Maher, all Belle Fourche; Steve Roseles, Hill City; and James Van Nuys and Jean Selvy Weiss, Rapid City.
