Tree planting workshop is Thursday

A free workshop on tree planting and tree care will be offered at Chadron State College on Thursday, Sept. 13. The workshop, which is open to the public, will begin at the Sandoz Center at 9 a.m.

Doak Nickerson of the Nebraska Forest Service will lead the group on an educational tour of trees and discuss a number of tree care topics. In addition to answering participants’ questions, Nickerson will explain and demonstrate how to handle large trees in burlap and wire baskets, tree spade techniques, and how to improve a tree’s longevity by providing proper care in its youth.

CSC horticulturist Lucinda Mays has made a special effort to invite public landscapers throughout the community, including the college’s maintenance crew. She said CSC will soon be planting dozens of trees on campus, and this activity will help ensure their long-term survival.

Mays advises attendees to dress for the day’s weather and to be prepared for some hands-on training.
