Three Chadron State College vocal groups will combine for a spring concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 1 at the Chadron Arts Center located at Fourth and King Streets. Advance tickets may be obtained through the Memorial Hall box office.

The women’s ensemble will open the program. The director, Dr. Una Taylor, said ensemble will present two sets of works.

The first is classically-oriented, and will include a spiritual, an arrangement of an Italian aria and a folk melody from Ecuador called “LaLluvia,” which depicts the sounds of traditional panpipes.

The second portion consists of a cappella arrangements of popular songs such as “Lollipop,” “Goodnight, Sweetheart,” “Mister Sandman” and “The Rose.”

Both the men’s ensemble and the concert choir are directed by Dr. Joel Schreuder.

The men’s group will open with a pair of sacred number, “We Adore You” and

“Set Me As a Seal.” They will be followed by three English numbers that will be sung as “catches,” or rounds. Also on the lighter side will be “The Art of the Ground Round” written by the infamous P.D.Q. Bach.

The other numbers are “The Awakening,” which has been recognized as one of the outstanding contemporary pieces for choral groups, and “Passing By,” which Schreuder said includes “tight harmony.”

The 39-voice concert choir also will begin its portion of the program with some sacred numbers, including “Exultate Deo,” which translated to English becomes “Sing for Joy to God,” and “Os Justi,” or “The Righteous.”

Also to be presented are “Water Night,” which Schreuder said is the choir’s “workhorse piece” this semester, and several gypsy songs that were written in German by Johannes Brahms, but have been translated to English.
