The opportunities, risks and trends in technology will be discussed during a Galaxy Series program at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 27 in Memorial Hall at Chadron State College. The speaker will be Fred Lane, an attorney, author and clerk of the school board at Burlington, Vt.

Titled “Lost in MySpace,” the program will be directed largely to students, but will be open to the public. There is no admission charge.

Lane points out that in ways unimaginable a decade ago the Internet has become an integral part of student life and now reaches beyond homework and research, emails, instant messaging and personal sites. He calls the phenomena, “the main avenues of communication.”

Lane is expected to speak on issues pertaining to how copyright laws apply to electronic materials, how to implement policies within the workplace for acceptable internet use and how the internet presents another frontier for claims of harassment and discrimination.

Lane is the author of several books, including “Obscene Profits: The Entrepreneurs of Pornography in the Cyber Age” and “The Naked Employee: How Technology is Compromising Workplace Privacy.”

His most recent book is “The Decency Wars: The Campaign to Cleanse American Culture.” It looks at the efforts of social and religious conservatives to use government policy to impose a particular moral vision on the nation. In addition, it discusses decency and obscenity, censorship, morality, mass media, contemporary politics and the American culture.
