The Chadron State College students who put in time to help other students succeed in the classroom were honored during a luncheon at the Kline Center on Tuesday. Ten students were given special attention during Chadron State’s annual recognition day for tutors and Supplemental Instruction leaders.

Frances Gonzalez, director of the CSC tutoring center, announced that four tutors have met certification requirements of the College Reading and Learning Association. They are Kinley Hadden of Bridgeport, Nat Watkins of Alliance, Sarah Bernhardt of Chadron and Hau Pham of Vietnam.

To become certified, students complete 10 hours of training and 25 hours of tutoring. To become a tutor at Chadron State, a student must earn A’s or B’s in their coursework and receive a recommendation from a faculty member.

SI leaders are students who have been successful in historically challenging courses and are hired to assist the courses’ current students. The SI leaders attend classes with the current students and host a series of review sessions for them each week.

CSC Student Academic Success Services, which oversees the tutoring center, declared Tuesday LaRae Tronstad Day in honor of the graduating senior who has served in the center for seven semesters. The Powell, Wyo., native helped students in math and speech communication, her two majors. She is graduating summa cum laude.

Other students leaving tutoring or the SI program because of graduation or other professional and educational opportunities are Becky Whipple of Newcastle, Neb., Sandy Strong of Mitchell, Neb., Jacob Quasney of Rapid City, S.D., Kinley Hadden of Bridgeport, Sharon Bannister of Kiowa, Colo., and Sarah Placke of St. Libory.
