If figures from Chadron State College’s Teacher Interview Day can serve as an indicator, the job market for education has improved for those seeking employment.

The number of schools that were represented at Friday’s event was up by 16 participants over last year.

Forty-seven schools attended Teacher Interview Day at the Nelson Physical Activity Center compared to 31 last year. The event is organized by Chadron State College’s Department of Internship and Career Services each year to make it convenient for job-seekers to connect with educational institutions that have openings.

Deena Kennell, Chadron State director of internships and career services, said the rise in participants may signal an increase in employment opportunity.

“This tells me is that there is a pretty large demand for teachers right now,” Kennell said.

A large majority of the schools in attendance listed multiple job openings. Omaha Public Schools topped the list with 29 vacancies.

Most of the attending administrators are from cities in Nebraska and Wyoming, with 16 and 14 schools, respectively. South Dakota was represented by seven, while Colorado and Kansas each had five. One of the districts is from Wichita, Kan., located more than 650 miles from Chadron.
