Marshall to speak about CSC presidents

Published:

From “Sparks to Park,” Chadron State College’s Con Marshall will tell about the institution’s presidential history during a presentation at the Reta King Library at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25.

Marshall’s speech is the first installment of the 2007-2008 Graves Lecture Series and is open to the public free of charge.

Marshall, who has known or worked for seven of the college’s 10 presidents, will tell stories about each, including the first, Joseph Sparks, and the current, Janie Park.

Barton Kline, who was president 1954-1961, was the fourth CSC president and the first of those the longtime CSC newsman knew. Marshall was a CSC student when he became acquainted with Kline.

Marshall said some of his favorite photographs of the presidents will be shown during Tuesday’s presentation.

Following is a list of CSC’s presidents: Joseph Sparks, 1911-1916; Robert Elliott, 1916-1939; Wiley Brooks, 1941-1954; Barton Kline, 1954-1961; Clark Elkins, 1961-1967; Larry Tangeman, 1973-1975; Edwin Nelson, 1967-1973 and 1975-1986; Sam Rankin, 1986-1998; Tom Krepel, 1998-2005; and Janie Park, 1998-2005.

Other presentations scheduled for this fall’s Graves Lecture Series are “Buffalo Soldiers” by Derek Goodwin, Oct. 9; “Following Cairns: An Artist’s Journey with Rocks and Time” by Mary Donahue, Oct. 23; and “Aesthetics and Sports” by Don Holst, Nov. 6.

Each presentation will begin at 7 p.m. in the library.
