Loni Hughes of Spearfish, S.D., and Kyle Schmidt of Gordon were named Chadron State College’s Homecoming queen and king Saturday.

The announcement was made during halftime of the Eagles’ football game against New Mexico Highlands.

Hughes, a senior studying math education, is a 2004 graduate of Spearfish High School. She is the daughter of Doug and Paige Hughes. Schmidt is a junior pre-medicine student. He graduated from Gordon High School in 2005. His parents are Randy and Marj Schmidt.

The royalty was chosen by a vote of the student body after 67 candidates were nominated by CSC clubs and organizations. Hughes was nominated by the Talons, the college’s team of student admissions ambassadors, and Schmidt was the Health Professions Club’s candidate.

The first runners-up are Chase Rasby of Sutherland, a junior studying to be a biology teacher, and Emily Banks of Wausa, a junior elementary childhood major.

The second attendants are Michelle DeBoer of Chadron, and John Latham of Camp Crook, S.D.

Craig Calkins of Cody, Wyo., and Kelli Payne of Neligh each finished fourth in the voting.
