The top eight vote-getters for Chadron State College’s Homecoming royalty were announced Thursday night during a ceremony at Armstrong Gym.

The finalists for queen are Emily Banks of Wausa, Michelle DeBoer of Chadron, Loni Hughes of Spearfish, S.D., and Kelli Payne of Neligh. The top four for king are Craig Calkins of Cody, Wyo., John Latham of Camp Crook, S.D., Chase Rasby of Sutherland, and Kyle Schmidt of Gordon. Hughes, Payne, DeBoer and Latham are seniors while the other four are juniors.

The eight were chosen from a field of 67 candidates after a vote of the student body. Candidates were nominated by CSC clubs and organizations.

The king, queen and their court will be announced and crowned during halftime of the Eagles’ football game against New Mexico Highlands, which kicks off at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Elliott Field.

Following Thursday's ceremony at Armstrong Gym, a spirited group of students and administrators trekked south of campus for the traditional lighting of C Hill. The students held six-inch glowsticks as they outlined the large concrete C. Then, with the CSC band providing background music, the landmark letter was brightened with high-wattage, generator-powered light bulbs.
