Holst to speak in lecture series

Published:

The final speaker during the fall session of the Dorset Graves Lecture Series at Chadron State College will be Dr. Don Holst. The program will be in the basement of the Reta King Library at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6.

Holst, who lives about eight miles south of Chadron, said his topic will be “Aesthetics and Sports.” He was a physical education professor and the head track and field coach at Chadron State 1965-73. He then was a professor at McKendree College at Lebanon, Ill., for about 20 years before retiring and returning to the Chadron area.

Holst is also a two-dimensional artist and was a Marine Corps officer.

In 2005, Holst’s book, “American Men of Olympic Track and Field” was published by McFarland and Company. It included stories Holst wrote after interviewing 18 Olympic athletes and coaches.

The Graves Lecture Series is open to the public without charge.

Organizers also are encouraging people to begin reading in preparation for next semester’s Dorset Graves Lecture Series Book Club discussion.

“Star Thrower,” a compilation of the late Loren C. Eiseley’s favorite writings, will be the topic of the discussion. Eiseley, a native Nebraskan who would have recently turned 100, was known for his meditations of the natural world. He died in 1977.

CSC faculty member Ann Buchmann will lead the discussion about the book during a session Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2008, at 7 p.m. in the library. Ann Krejci, another CSC faculty member who is one of the club’s organizers, said anyone who is interested in joining should read the book and be ready to participate in the discussion. It also is open to the public free of charge.
