Faculty visiting Ukraine

About a dozen Chadron State College faculty members left Monday to visit Ukraine, one of the former Soviet bloc nations in eastern Europe.

Much of the time will be spent at the National Agricultural University of Ukraine in Kiev, the nation’s capital.

The CSC delegation is led by Dr. Gary White, dean of the School of Business, Economics, Applied and Mathematical Sciences. This will be his fourth trip to Ukraine dating back to the early 1990s when he was a graduate student at Iowa State University. He also went there twice more recently while serving as a department chairman at Dickinson State in North Dakota.

White said the visit is designed to increase the CSC faculty members’ global understanding and to perhaps develop some partnerships that will strengthen both institutions.

He added that there was no clear-cut agenda for the trip, but some exchange programs and the forming of a sister-institution relationship with NAU may grow out of the visit.

“I anticipate that after we’ve met with our counterparts there we’ll have some ideas that may develop into programs,” White said.

While six of those on the trip are from the Business and Economics Department, the others are from various disciplines.

After preliminary talks take place this week, the president of Chadron State, Dr. Janie Park, plans to fly to Kiev next week to continue the negotiations and perhaps sign some agreements.

Most of the members of the CSC delegation will return home on May 30. White said he will remain in the country a few more days.
