A team from Chadron State College placed third among 19 entries in Rangeland Cup competition at the International Range Management Convention at Reno, Nev., earlier this month.

Members of the team were Craig Eddie of Ogallala, Kimmy Mott of Fullerton, Dan Ruterbories of Ord and Jenny Walker of Edgemont, S.D. They were among eight CSC students who attended the convention. Also attending were the two CSC range management professors, Dr. Chuck Butterfield and Dr. Georgia Younglove, and Dr. Jim O’Rourke, professor emeritus at CSC and former president of the international organization.

The competition featured a poster that the team developed, and is designed to promote critical thinking and cooperative, collaborative work on both current and historically important rangeland ecology and management topics.

Utah State won first and the University of Wyoming was second in the contest.

Also during the convention, two more CSC students, Matt Lucas of Arnold and Lori Jeffrey of Lisco, gave papers on research they conducted following the wildfires that struck northwest Nebraska last summer. Lucas spoke on the effects the fires had on threadleaf sedge, or blackroot, grasses and Jeffrey spoke on the influence thinning methods had on the intensity of the fire.

Both Ruterbories and Lucas placed in the upper half among the students taking the range management examination. They joined with Mott in entering the plant identification competition.

Butterfield is co-sponsor of the SRM’s student conclave and is chairman of the society’s web site taskforce. Younglove is a member of the Range Science Education Council.
