Chess Tournament is Saturday

The 25th annual Chadron State College Chess Tournament will be on Saturday, March 17, beginning at 10 a.m. in the Sandoz Center.

The tournament has long attracted a number of the outstanding chess players, as well as those just learning, from at least a 100-mile radius of Chadron.

Each person who enters will play four games. The games in the first three rounds will be limited to 90 minutes. The limit in the final round will be two hours.

The $7 entry fee helps pay for the six trophies that are awarded, plus the coffee, tea, cheese, veggies and cookies that will be available. Participants are asked to bring a standard chess board and pieces, and a chess clock, if they have one.

The tournament coordinator is Dr. Ron Miller, associate professor of sociology at CSC. He said this year’s tournament will be dedicated to Martin Fleming of Tarboro, N.C., who as a CSC graduate student 25 years ago founded the Northwest Nebraska Gamesters Association that sponsors the tournament.

During the last quarter century, Miller said the association has sponsored more than 75 tournaments, ranging from table tennis and pool to Dungeons and Dragons as well as chess and various card games.
