Buffalo Soldiers presentation is Tuesday

Derek Goodwin of Chadron will discuss the Buffalo Soldiers during a presentation Tuesday, Oct. 9, at Chadron State College. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m. in the Student Center.

Buffalo Soldiers was the name given to segregated black soldiers in the U.S. military in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The group consisted of former slaves, freemen and black Civil War soldiers. Included among them were the 9th and 10th Cavalry stationed at northwest Nebraska’s Fort Robinson.

Goodwin’s program is the second installment of the Dorset Graves Lecture Series sponsored by CSC’s Reta King Library.

Milton Wolf, director of the Reta King Library, said organizers scheduled the program for the Student Center instead of the library to accommodate a larger crowd and to make room the number of visual aids Goodwin uses in the presentation. There will be a display of artifacts, weaponry and original prints depicting the era of the Buffalo Soldiers.

“The last time he was on campus, it was standing-room only,” Wolf said.
