Buffalo Soldier program is Thursday

Published:

A history of the Buffalo Soldiers will be presented at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22 in the Scottsbluff Room of the Student Center at Chadron State College as part of the college’s Black History Month observance. The program will be open to the public without charge.

The presenter will be Derek Goodwin of Chadron, a computer science and business teacher at the Red Cloud School near Pine Ridge, S.D. Goodwin said he has a long-standing interest in the Buffalo Soldiers and will share some of the information he has uncovered.

Buffalo Soldiers were blacks who were given the nickname by Indians because of the perceived similarity between the hair of the soldiers and buffaloes. After a while, the reference became widespread.

Buffalo Soldiers from both the 9th and 10th Cavalries were stationed at Fort Robinson for nearly 20 years around the turn of the 20th Century.
