Bordeaux Band to begin rehearsals

The Bordeaux Community Band will begin rehearsing for its spring concert this coming week. The first session will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16 in Memorial Hall. Rehearsals will follow each Tuesday evening until the concert on Sunday, March 18. The director, Carola Winkle, said the theme this spring will be “Past, Present and Future.”

“That means we will be playing some old favorites, several contemporary numbers and some music that is so new we haven’t even received it yet,” Winkle said.

One of the highlights will be several popular numbers from a bygone era that are billed “Tin Pan Alley.” They include “Happy Days Are Here Again,” “I’m Looking Over a Four-Leaf Clover” and “Oh, You Beautiful Doll.”

Among the current numbers to be performed are a suite written by Jay Gilbert, a music professor at Doane College; a selection composed by Sam Hazo, a high school teacher in Pittsburgh; and “Rondo” from “Concerto No. 1 in f minor” written by German composer Carl von Weber.

In addition, the director said one of the numbers will feature three clarinet soloists, Laura Empson, Malinda Linegar and Kimberly Ouderkirk. Dr. William Winkle, long-time director of bands at Chadron State College, will be the tuba soloist on “Maid of Mist.”

A few instruments are available for band members to rent. One-hour of college credit may be earned by participating in the band.
