Woodwind Day to be music-lovers delight

Published:

Music lovers will have the opportunity to hear some of the region’s outstanding performers free of charge during Woodwind Day at Chadron State College on Thursday, Nov. 2.

While the event is to benefit high school musicians from the region, three performances by the clinicians, other top woodwind performers and the visiting musicians are on tap during the day, and are open to the public.

The first of the sessions will be at 9 a.m. in Memorial Hall, where the Woodwind Day clinicians will be demonstrating their talents. The clinicians are Todd Kahler, Sundance, Wyo., on flute; Nancy Olney, Rapid City, S.D., on oboe; Dave Martinson, Sturgis, S.D., on saxophone; Richard Turner, Casper, Wyo., on bassoon; and Carola Winkle of Chadron on clarinet.

Winkle is the coordinator of the woodwind program at Chadron State and has arranged the schedule for the day. She will join Turner for a clarinet-bassoon duet during the opening recital.

Also featured during the recital will be three of the outstanding clarinet students at Chadron State in recent years. They are CSC graduates Laura Empson and Malinda Sprentall Linegar, both of Chadron, and senior Shannon Yetter of Sutherland.

Empson will join with Kahler and Olney for a trio while Kahler, Turner, Linegar and Yetter will form a quartet that will close the opening recital.

The second session will be at 1 p.m. when 10 CSC students who are members of the clarinet choir from the Bordeaux Community Band will be performing.

A flute quartet made up of Stephanie Aulston, Juleburg, Colo.; Carrie Hoagland, Hastings; Giselle Andersen, Fairbury; and Holly McCheney, Grand Junction, Colo.; will open the program.

Also performing will be a saxophone quartet composed of Paige Bosch, Wheatland, Wyo.; Ashley Jeffers, Valentine; Melinda Lobner, Lewellen; and Andrew Meyers, Minden; and a clarinet quartet made up of Amanda Morris, Lincoln; Nicole Penning, Rapid City; Katie Ringleman, Imperial; and Yetter.

The latter group has been selected to perform for the North Central Music Educators National Conference in Lincoln on Friday, Nov. 17. Ten states will be represented at the conference.

Woodwind Day will conclude with a performance by the approximately 140 students from 10 schools who will be attending the event. The concert will be at 2:45 in Memorial Hall and will feature selections from “Ten Masterworks” by William Pelz. Winkle will be the conductor.

Rehearsals at 10:15 a.m. and 2 p.m. will precede the concert.

Area schools which will have students involved include Chadron, Crawford, Hay Springs, Gordon-Rushville and Bridgeport. Others are coming from as far away as North Platte, Sturgis and Sundance.
