Water is emphasis of community chorus
There will be heavy emphasis on water during the spring concert to be presented by the Bordeaux Community Band and Chadron Community Chorus. The theme is “A Musical Celebration of Water, Earth, Fire and Air,” but many of the numbers to be presented feature water.
The concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 28 in Memorial Hall at Chadron State College.
The concert will be the first for Dr. Una Taylor, who became the director of the community chorus in January. The band is in its 12th season under the direction of Carola K. Winkle.
Winkle said all of the pieces the band will be presenting are related to water. The opening numbers will be “Brighton Beach” and “Maelstrom.”
A highlight will be “The Place Where the Reeds Were Destroyed” by Quincy C. Hilliard. The work was commissioned by the Nebraska State Bandmasters Association in 1994. Winkle said it is a multi-movement, programmatic number based upon the legend of Acapulco. Acatl, which means reeds, was the name given to the oldest son of the Nahao chief. The work tells of his forbidden love for Quaihuith, which means rain. When they could not consummate their love, both are dissolved into a mud pond.
The band also will present several lighter numbers. They include “The Irish Washerwoman” by Leroy Anderson, the Walt Disney favorite, “Pirates of the Caribbean,” and Kenneth Alford’s march, “Colonel Bogey,” which includes the famous melody from the movie, “Bridge Over the River Kwai.”
The choir’s selections will include the Harry Belafonte tune, “Turn the World Around,” along with “I Will Be Earth,” “Song from the Mira,” the spiritual “Wade in the Water,” “Fire” and “Winds.”
Also on the program will be a women’s vocal ensemble that Taylor formed this semester.
Reservations may be made through the Memorial Hall box office at 432-6360. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for youths 18 and under and senior citizens if they are obtained in advance. All tickets at the door will be $6.
